Overview

When Telos Design Build was entrusted with the restoration of the Kuli‘ou‘ou Residence, the mandate was both precise and reverent: preserve the spirit of John Hara’s 1984 architectural masterwork while preparing it for another generation of life on Oahu’s coast. Set on a one-acre lot anchored by a historic fishpond, the residence—originally designed by Hara, AIA—combines five bedrooms, seven bathrooms, a home office, media room, and a conditioned wine room within a setting deeply rooted in place.

This project marked Telos founder Jason Zick’s first independent venture after leaving Blue Heron, and it established the firm’s guiding ethos: heritage preservation, disciplined craftsmanship, and client-driven excellence. Telos began by addressing decades of exposure to salt air and tropical weather, carefully restoring teak and fir joinery, rough-sawn cedar siding, and reinforcing the copper-edged tile roof and structural core. All utilities and mechanical systems were fully modernized to meet contemporary performance expectations.

Beyond preservation, Telos introduced thoughtful enhancements that respect the home’s architectural rhythm, including a heated pool and spa positioned alongside the revitalized koi pond and lagoon, custom hardwood cabinetry, energy-efficient glazing, passive ventilation strategies, and discreet smart technologies to support modern family living. A 500-square-foot on-site workshop further supports the property’s long-term stewardship.

Hara’s original vision—rooted in Japanese influences such as engawa verandas, layered thresholds, and serene gardens, paired with a distinctly Hawaiian separation of private quarters and open entertaining spaces—was strengthened rather than altered. Through careful refinement, Telos ensured the home retains its cultural and architectural resonance while functioning seamlessly for contemporary life.

For the owners, the restoration is about more than honoring an award-winning legacy. It is about confidence that their home will endure decades of coastal conditions, offering comfort, sustainability, and elegance that continues to bring family and community together.
